兩年一度的高雄國際貨櫃藝術節，自2001年起舉辦至今已歷六屆，貨櫃所承載的人類文明發展歷程中多元而複雜的概念，被來自世界各地的藝術家以各式各樣的方式表現。這些藝術創作以貨櫃為載體呈現在觀眾眼前，有的則可讓觀眾置身貨櫃空間內，進一步以視覺以外的感官，體驗藝術家的想法，然而這些作為藝術作品呈現的貨櫃，並非以提供人類日常活動的機能性空間為目的。

2013高雄國際貨櫃藝術節的舉辦，試著重新審視貨櫃的特性與人類社會未來可能的發展趨勢，提出另一種貨櫃藝術的發展方向—「可以居」的貨櫃空間。邀請多組國內外建築師與空間設計師提案並進行原型實作的可居貨櫃空間，實踐「生活設計‧貨櫃建築」理念，在駁二藝術特區展出，讓貨櫃成為聯結創意設計與生活空間的介面。

The Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival is a biennial event that has been held six times since 2001. In the previous Festivals, the participating artists around the world used shipping containers to present in front of viewers diverse and complicated concepts developed throughout human civilizations. Some of their works even invited viewers to come inside the containers to explore the artists’ concepts through the senses other than sight. However, the works in the previous Festivals were presented as works of art, not functional spaces for human daily activities.

By contrast, the Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival 2013 attempts to re-examine the characteristics of containers and possible trends of human society, suggesting another development direction for container arts—“Inhabitable” container spaces.
“The Inhabitables” project, based on the concept of “lifestyle design‧container architecture”, invites several domestic and international architects and space designers to design inhabitable container spaces and then produce the prototypes of their designs. Exhibited in Pier-2 Art District during the Festival this year, their works epitomize the seamless integration of creative designs and living spaces.
