Connecting with the energy from the Contemporary Austronesian Art Program accumulated by the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts over the past 10-odd years, the 10th Kaohsiung Container Art Festival in 2019 also resonates with the government’s New Southbound Policy to develop more cultural exchange with Southeast Asian countries. This exhibition is curated as an international exhibition with its focus on Austronesian and Southeastern Asian regions and islands.

Taking on the theme of “trap”, the festival this year takes us back to the primitive times when humans had to survive by setting up traps to catch food. In ancient times, there was no supermarket and people had to grow, hunt, or gather their food from nature. When people lived together and built villages, they divided labor and bartered the products of their labor in order to survive together. In the era of bartering, did humans survive because of their competition against or collaboration with one another?

In this festival, we construct a dialogue between wild jungles and urban jungles, discussing freely the “trap”—its concrete existence (at the substance level) and its conceptual nature (at the abstract level). There are diverse forms of traps. How can we identify them and avoid being trapped?

The issue of “trap” can be taken both lightly and seriously. We look forward to seeing how the participating artists extend their discussions about “trap” to different domains of life, such culture, human rights, land, politics, economy, and society, in their works.

In our daily life, the moment of discovering and/or falling into a trap is always immediately followed by a sudden “Ah!”. It is the same with artists. When they let out a sudden “Ah!”, it is the exact moment when they discover the inspirational source of their artistic creation!
