The 2021 Forum for Creativity in Art exhibition—"Liu Shih-Tung: Cut Out and Mix"—was planned by senior curator Wei Yu around 54 works by artist Liu Shih-Tung from 1990 to the present. Paving a route with "observation," this exhibition takes us through the dimensions and graphic styles of observation, and lets us understand the artist's history and thinking. The exhibited works include Liu Shih-Tung's documents and video works from the 1990s, his collages, paintings, sculptures, and installations since 2000, and his series works and project art from the most recent five years, which focus on existence and the natural environment.
While the exhibiting artist Liu Shih-Tung was in university during the 1990s, many public and private art museums and art schools were being established in Taiwan. At that time, Liu relied on works displaying great experimental spirit and impressive ambition to obtain active involvement in exhibitions with many forms and topics. Liu's artistic styles are diverse and prolific, and his technical freedom is not restrained by ancient or modern conventions. He has created large provocative installations, made paintings with sand collected from the beach, and produced composite spatial works involving ready-made objects. His painting works tangibly express his refined thinking, and his expressive methods emphasize visual effects and a feeling of the times, while also showing a clear connection with the traditions of classic art.
Curator Wei Yu holds a Ph.D. in the humanities and cultural studies from Birkbeck, University of London, and is the curator and researcher of the Taiwan Contemporary Culture C-LAB. He is a senior art and culture researcher, and has extensive curation experience. He has actively curated or participated in major exhibitions held by public and private domestic and international art institutions since 2001. He was hired as an overseas observer for this museum's "Kaohsiung Award" of 2010 and 2018, and attended the call for works, selection, and review processes with points of views of an art journalist and critic. In 2017, he co-curated Broken Spectre at Taipei Fine Arts Museum with ET@T. His recent curatorial projects at C-LAB since 2018 include Re: A Morning in Taipei, Yao Jui Chung-Republic of Cynic and Signals: CREATORS 2020-21; also the co-curatorial projects, The Alternative Guide of Time, City Flip-Flop: Stained and ANIMA: the 7^th Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition.
